Historical nicknames
Even royalty members are not immune to a playful or suggestive nickname. There are a few nicknames that have survived history to tell a bit more about famous relationships from the past.
The Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte referred to his wife, Josefina, as his “little Josefina” all his life. Josephine preferred to be called by the name she had in her youth, “Rose”. Josephine refrained from giving her husband such a name. Instead, she referred to him as her “Dear Husband” or “My Dear Bonaparte,” if she did.
Cleopatra and Marco Antonio
Who knows what they were called in private, but this ancient couple was never known for their laid-back manners. After the loss of her husband, Julius Caesar, the last queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, she maintained a scandalous relationship with the main warrior of Rome, Marco Antonio. We see in the coins and in monuments the couple’s love for long titles and their willingness to give each other the names of the deities. Cleopatra called herself “Isis”, to which Marco Antonio happily agreed to call her. Marco Antonio was named “Dionysus” in honor of his favorite god of wine and celebration.
Henry and his wives
No one believed himself more loving than Henry Tudor or Henry VIII. His most tumultuous relationship was undoubtedly with Lady Ana Bolena. In his letters to the future queen, he called her “darling” and even “my dear.” For her part, Ana used nicknames such as “great king” and “my dear sovereign.” Henry has a long recorded history of using nicknames and platitudes as compliments when courting a new wife or lover.
Choose a nickname
The name of affection you choose for the person you love may last a lifetime or change with age or seasons of life. Take your time choosing a romantic nickname for someone you love. When you find one that you both like, use it on cards, sweet love notes, and private conversations.
