Learning that the person you love is suffering from a serious illness, such as a cancer, causes a violent shock. How to live with the disease of the other, to help overcome it, to accompany it even in its moments of discouragement? Loving someone can make you sick, but can you love and stay with someone who is sick? The disease can be put off, we obviously prefer to be with someone in good health. Not necessarily at the level of feelings but because of serious problems that can affect health. Hope and Steve had a first magical rendezvous almost unforgettable but four months later, things got complicated.
At their first meeting, Steve, 28, had pulled out all the stops to seduce Hope, a psychotherapist. Very quickly, she had also realized that the young man’s hands trembled abnormally. Four months later, their relationship was still good. It was August 2011 and the doctors finally found what was wrong with Steve. He was suffering from Charcot’s disease.
This disease causes progressive and inexorable paralysis of the whole body. Two days after this terrible announcement, during a walk, Steve makes his proposal. Hope told People: “He told me, ‘You do not have to stay with me, you heard what the doctor said’. But I told him I would not go anywhere. ”
The couple celebrated their wedding in October 2011, two months later, because of the young man’s prognosis. Steve hoped to be able to walk for D-Day. 2012 was a complicated year and his respiratory functions began to shrink. The doctors inserted a tube to help him. Since then, Hope has seen her husband go worse and worse but has stayed by his side more than ever: He is always so beautiful when I look at him. He is always adorable. He no longer shaves his beard. He is hairy, and I love it. “
Their story has been the subject of a great documentary that will be found in the first few excerpts below. The couple still believe in it and do not give up. Hope is a full-time caregiver for her husband who has become completely dependent. He is passionate about painting and expresses himself through a computer. He fights as much as he can and thanks life every day for allowing him to meet Hope.
